The West
The West is home to the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. It covers 157,710 hectares between 150 and 700 m of altitude in the Melaky region. Monsoon rains and groundwater dissolved the limestone rock into veritable stone cathedrals.
The Tsingy offer razor-sharp limestone ridges crossed by harness on dizzying footbridges. The Avenue of the Baobabs, between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina, is one of the most photographed sites in the world. The region preserves unique fauna of Decken's sifaka lemurs and miniature chameleons.
The Tsingy odyssey
A week out of time: three-day descent of the Tsiribihina river on a wooden barge, bivouacs on sandbanks under the Milky Way, crossing of the Tsingy with harnesses and fixed ropes, and mythic finale at sunset under the Avenue of the Baobabs.
